Built in 1787 as part of the Spanish mission system, this site has witnessed centuries of devotion, disaster, and death. Over time, tales of paranormal activity have transformed the mission into a hotspot for ghost hunters, including an unforgettable feature on the popular TV show Ghost Adventures.
A History Steeped in Tragedy
Mission La Purísima was the 11th of the 21 California missions founded by Franciscan friars. Originally established near present-day Lompoc, the mission was destroyed in a devastating earthquake in 1812. Survivors relocated the mission to its current location, but hardship continued to shadow the grounds. Disease, conflict, and cultural upheaval claimed the lives of many Native Chumash people and settlers alike.
In 1824, the mission was the epicenter of the Chumash Revolt, an uprising against the Spanish soldiers that ended in violence and death. These tumultuous events left a deep mark on the land, and some believe the spirits of those who died there still linger.

In 2013, the crew from Ghost Adventures featured Mission La Purísima Concepción in Season 8, Episode 11 of the show. Investigators Zak Bagans, Aaron Goodwin, and Nick Groff conducted an overnight investigation that produced several spine-chilling moments.
During their stay, the team captured unexplained noises and a strange mist on camera. Their equipment registered temperature fluctuations and EVPs (electronic voice phenomena), including what they believed to be a voice saying “get out.” The team described an oppressive, heavy feeling in certain rooms and noted how quickly the atmosphere seemed to change from peaceful to hostile.
