As an experiment, I decided to have an AI engine create a quiz. I gave ChatGPT the following prompt:
“Create a fun and interesting quiz, with twenty multiple-choice questions about the California missions. Each question should have four answer, and only the first one should be correct.”
The quiz produced by ChatGPT is shown below. Here are some things that I noticed:
- The quiz is not bad. It would certainly be appropriate for students studying the missions.
- The quiz is very easy. (I should have stated a difficulty level.)
- The answer to question 4 is arguable – which is not a good thing in a quiz! From the standpoint of the church, the purpose of the missions was to convert the Native Americans to Christianity. But from the standpoint of the Spanish government, the purpose was to establish control over Alta California and deter incursions from Russia and England.
- The answer to question 9 is simply wrong. The missions produced more wheat, barley, and maize (corn) than they did grapes.
- I asked ChatGPT to list the “correct” answer to each questions first. If you were going to give this quiz to someone, you’d obviously need to mix up the answers!
Still, I’d give ChatGPT a B+ for this effort. It’s a pretty good quiz!
